Background

Since medical supplies became disposable, hospitals, charities, manufacturers, distributors and other industry professionals have been successful in recovering medical equipment and supplies for donation to developing nations.

Med-Eq, The Medical Equipment Donation Agency, has grown from the AIRe-mail program and continues to connect donors of medical equipment and supplies with Med-Eq members via a managed web based interface.  Originally  launched in 1998 as a joint project of REMEDY and the Office of International Health of the Yale School of Management, Med-Eq is 130 plus members strong and growing.

Med-Eq and REMEDY are frequently notified of medical supplies and equipment that are available for donation from individuals, hospitals, medical suppliers and facilities throughout the United States. These donors often do not have regular receiving charities or have specialized items that are only useful to certain recipients.

Through the Med-Eq program, the description and location of available supplies or equipment are posted to the Med-Eq website.  Current Med-Eq members can choose to be notified of a new post and view it at Med-Eq.org.  Interested parties request the item through Med-Eq and are screened and provided with the donors contact information.  The receiving charity then contacts the donor directly to arrange pickup or shipment of the donated materials. This system maximizes efficiency while reducing the hassle for the donor and recovered items sent directly to where they are needed.  To date, Med-Eq and REMEDY have helped facilitate donations of everything from anesthesia machines and 64-foot containers of medical supplies, to an ambulance. The possibilities are endless and donations of any type and size are welcome!
